The act of living in Zimbabwe is something of a risk at the current time, so you could think that there might be little desire for visiting Zimbabwe's gambling dens. Actually, it appears to be functioning the other way, with the awful market circumstances leading to a greater ambition to wager, to attempt to locate a fast win, a way out of the problems.

For many of the locals subsisting on the tiny local money, there are 2 dominant types of betting, the national lotto and Zimbet. As with almost everywhere else on the planet, there is a national lottery where the chances of profiting are extremely low, but then the winnings are also extremely large. It's been said by financial experts who look at the concept that most don't buy a card with the rational expectation of winning. Zimbet is centered on either the local or the British soccer divisions and involves predicting the outcomes of future matches.

Zimbabwe's gambling halls, on the other foot, pander to the astonishingly rich of the society and travelers. Up till a short while ago, there was a very large tourist business, centered on safaris and visits to Victoria Falls. The market collapse and associated conflict have carved into this market.

Amongst Zimbabwe's gambling dens, there are 2 in the capital, Harare, the Carribea Bay Resort and Casino, which has five gaming tables and one armed bandits, and the Plumtree Casino, which has only slot machine games. The Zambesi Valley Hotel and Entertainment Center in Kariba also has just slot machines. Mutare contains the Monclair Hotel and Casino and the Leopard Rock Hotel and Casino, the two of which contain gaming tables, slot machines and electronic poker machines, and Victoria Falls has the Elephant Hills Hotel and Casino and the Makasa Sun Hotel and Casino, the pair of which has video poker machines and table games.

In addition to Zimbabwe's gambling dens and the above mentioned lottery and Zimbet (which is quite like a parimutuel betting system), there are a total of two horse racing tracks in the country: the Matabeleland Turf Club in Bulawayo (the second municipality) and the Borrowdale Park in Harare.

Given that the economy has deflated by beyond forty percent in the past few years and with the connected deprivation and crime that has resulted, it isn't known how well the sightseeing industry which is the foundation for Zimbabwe's casinos will do in the next few years. How many of the casinos will survive until things improve is basically not known.
